6 Examples of Contemporary Tools for Research Writing

While existing method of doing research widely used by many students are effective, new tools and methods are being developed in order to make research easier for you.

Many students have complained about the enormous stress encountered when doing research. You will admit that as a student, at one point or the other, you faced challenges in gathering data, gathering sources or materials for your literature review, organizing your research, cleaning data, analyzing it or managing and organizing your reference. The challenges that we face become enormous especially during this COVID period, students struggle to collect data for their research, this may also serve as a limitation to their study. However, the good news is there are a lot of tools that makes writing and organizing research very easy and this is what this article address. Mind you, this list is not exhaustive and you can even find more.

To strengthen my point, I would like to share with you some of resources that I have used and I find really helpful either when doing research or when consulting for students.

For Questionnaire design, I use Google forms, survey monkey, formApp, RedCap and Typeform. Google forms and Survey Monkey are the most versatile. If you are new to online survey and are trying it out for the first time, use google forms and survey monkey for better experience.

For Interviews, use Magpi for interactive voice data collection, phone recorders, video cameras

For Data entry, storage and analysis there are a number of them however, you can choose one or two and master it. Examples, Prizmo, Docufree, Omnipage, Google sheets, Microsoft Excel, XLSTAT, SPSS, STATA, Eviews, MATLAB, R, Python, SAS etc

Research writing tools

Mind you, there are a lot of freelancing opportunities for students with data entry and analysis skills. So, the reward is not just you completing your research, you can also make money with these skills.

For checking Plagiarism, we can use Ithenticate, Turnitin, Quetext, Plagscan.

Tools for Data visualisation include Googlecharts, Plotly, Leaflet, Microsoft Excel and many more.

Reference Management software includes Citavi, Mendeley, Zothero, Ithenticate. I have used Citavi and will rate it as one of the best. It is free and allows you organize your reference and also write your research well with appropriate citation.
